DIY Chalkboard Kitchen Island: Why I Love It

DIY Chalkboard Kitchen Island

This weekend I was inspired to make a DIY chalkboard kitchen island. We did it in our old house, and I have been missing it in our new house! Does anyone else have kids who put their feet on the walls? Like all the time? Especially while they are sitting at the counter eating?

I just love, love, love having black paint with a chalky film instead of feet marks! And it was actually a rewarding DIY project instead of one of those projects I feel like I have to pay someone else to do or immediately regret it right after I start.

Step One: DIY Chalkboard Kitchen Island

Poor Matt. He had just sat down in the car after leaving Home Depot when I texted him asking him to please, please get some frog tape. I thought about trying to paint without taping around the edges, but that would have been a huge mistake.

I also thought about painting without putting down any plastic on the ground. In fact, I was convinced that I wouldn’t need it at all. I only put it down in case the boys wanted to grab a brush and help me.

Ha, ha! I was so wrong! I splattered paint several times and was so glad I had properly prepared.

Step Two

I painted the wall with two coats. And that was it! Did I really even need to label the steps? Probably not. It was a very easy project!

Oh, wait, there was one more step.

Step Three

I “seasoned” the wall by rubbing chalk all over it and then wiping it off.

I know chalkboard walls are a trend (probably a passé trend?), but I like it nonetheless. It’s way better than a dirty wall!

Love! We did this with all our kitchen cabinets at our old house and it was so fun since it was a very small space. We used Martha Stewart’s “recipe” for making our own chalk paint and it worked splendidly and saved a ton of money 😉
