Green Smoothies

My green smoothie making has begun!

I’ve made two so far. Here are the recipes:

Smoothie #1:

  • Green chard
  • A pear
  • Half a banana
  • Ice
  • Water

Smoothie #2:

  • Red chard
  • Frozen peaches
  • Frozen blackberries
  • Water

The first one was really tasty. The second one was a bit too earthy. I’m not sure if it was the red chard or maybe it was all the seeds in the berries. Hard to tell.

This week, I’m going to do baby spinach and pear.

And my regular ol’ blender seems to work just fine! (I’m scared to try a smoothie from a Vitamix because I might realize that I’m really missing out…).

Any other good recipes to recommend?

    Try peeling a banana, wrapping it in celaphane and freezing it. Then use that in place of the ice. It makes for a heartier smoothie and keeps it from being watered down. Also, maybe try some orange juice instead of water to possibly brighten up the earthier concoctions. And one last thing, throw in some ground flax seed…it doesn't change anything, it just adds some much needed nutrients. Have fun!

    the banana trick is great. I really have to add a banana to all of our smoothies for the consistency. The hard part for me is to remember to freeze them. LOL
    Try adding a little honey or agave to the ones that turn out a little too "earthy" it really helps.
    I use 1 banana, 1 apple with peel, one orange peeled (sometimes I add a slice or two of the peel but be careful it can be really bitter if you get too much. Yogurt when I have it in the fridge, good size handful of my greens and either green tea or juice. Blueberries are pretty tasty but your juice will turn out a little brown. Then I pour it into two containers so my husband and I both get to take some to work.
    Sometimes I'll add a handful of nuts in there too.
    I'm having to take a break from them for a little while. They (along with everything else) is giving me raging heartburn.

    Have you heard of the Joy for Life retreats? They are week long retreats that involve nourishing the body and the mind… for the body part you drink green smoothies for every meal for 7 days as a sort of detox (plus fresh/raw fruits and veggies).

    Just discovered I had somehow not been getting feeds in my reader so I'm playing catch up, hence the late comment.

    My favorite recipe is ~1 cup cantaloupe, 1/2 cup blueberries (frozen), 1 small banana (frozen), huge handful of spinach and unsweetened almond milk. So good!

    My favorite is super simple and easy, just three ingredients! 1 frozen banana (we buy extra, let them get deliciously ripe then break into large pieces and throw into a bag in the freezer), 2 big handfuls of fresh spinach, and almond milk. Simple but so delicious and refreshing.

    It would be so great if you could have a recipe section for your favourite meals, (i know you talk alot about cooking with matt) !!!!

    Plain yogurt, kale, a frozen banana, and fresh pineapple. The kale is a bit earthy so don't use too much, or replace it with spinach.

    Excellent post AND comment stream! I wrote down the recipes and went out and bought my first ever flax seed and made my first green smoothie this morning (banana, spinach, almond milk version) – delicious! And I felt so proud of myself for the goodies I was putting in my body. I can't wait to try the rest of all of the great ideas discussed. I ALSO took advantage of a night with out my meat eater man to spoil my ex-vegetarian self with your chickpea/tomato/quinoa idea above… I had it for dinner last night and I'm eating it again for lunch right now – just as delicious and tasty as I had hoped. I mean how could it not be – it's all of my favorite ingredients! My man came home when I had just finished making it and was like, that's your dinner? It looks like a side. Little does he know I will be serving it to him as a side in the very near future. I am winning him over to the veggie side slowly but surely – the 'side' is usually my main course with the meat on the 'side' 🙂
