Survey Says: Not Pregnant
The nurse called to say that the results of my blood work indicate that I’m not pregnant. Honestly, I’m surprised. I feel pregnant again (even though you’re not supposed to be able to feel anything). But I would also be surprised to get pregnant so easily. So who knows. I asked how early blood work can measure pregnancy, and she said ten days. It’s been more like eight days, so I have no idea if that’s affecting it or not. The internet said as early as 7 days.
I don’t know. Just wanted to keep you updated.
(Meanwhile, I’m trying to generate a whole list of reasons why it would be good not be be pregnant right now–you know, to make myself feel better: 1) I would have more time to save up more money for a maternity leave 2) we would have more time to get our house built and settled into before the baby comes.)

Hang in there, Sarah. I'm at the same point in my cycle as you are and can completely relate. <3

Well, shoot. But you're right, more time to save, to prepare, etc. I know it must be disappointing to get a negative result but the good news, there's always next month, and it's right around the corner!

First, 8 days past ovulation is well within the window for HCG not showing up on a blood test. It typically doesn't show up until 6-12 days past ovulation. Also did they run a qualitative HCG or a quantitative HCG? In the future be sure to ask for a quantitative HCG draw as it is more accurate, particularly early in the "two week wait." On that note, it is generally a good idea to try to wait until 14 days past ovulation before testing so that you have a result you can trust fairly confidently and don't run the risk of false negatives or early positives that end in chemical pregnancy.
Also what you said in your last post about not being allowed to complain about the wait is fairly accurate. You've been incredibly fortunate in this process, which I know you've acknowledged in the past but it is still very good for you to remember that even if conception this time around takes six months or more that you would still be incredibly lucky. It might be helpful to develop a plan for the two week wait just in case it does take more than a month this time around so that you can keep perspective and try to stay as grounded as possible.

Hi Sarah,
I know the feeling! I had an early miscarriage in May, and I felt more pregnant after the miscarriage than before (nausea, fatigue), how's that for unfair… but it was just hormones that hadn't quieted down yet. Thank G-d I am expecting now – hang in there, it can take a few cycles!

I nearly did a double take when I saw this post. I just got the same call from my nurse yesterday, after going through my first fertility procedure – an IUI – this month. That two-week wait never gets any easier – and I started trying at the same time you started trying for Henry – but for me the disappointment at getting the negative results definitely gets easier. In a way, it's a relief to get past the test and get on with trying again.
The best way I've found to deal with the wait is to try not to plan how things would work if I did get pregnant that cycle – not planning when I would tell my family, what month the baby would be born, how that would affect us and our schedules, etc. This is HARD, but it's just one less thing you have to let go of if it doesn't work out. I also try to remind myself that I am adaptable, even if I do prefer to plan things, and that it will work out no matter when it happens.
You'll probably want to test again in a week, since you tested so early, so good luck with the rest of the wait! You can do it! 🙂

I experienced two years of negative results but am now finally pregnant with my first baby! You should definitely test again in a week or so. Sending positive thoughts your way! Best of luck!
