DIY Halloween Costumes: Time to Get Started

DIY Halloween costumes from a couple years ago

I always feel a tad self-conscious when I write posts like this. Especially because I now know that my desire to plan so far ahead is connected to the unpredictability of my childhood! But it is who I am. So I’m here to talk about DIY Halloween costumes. August is here, so it’s time to get started!

I’ve been doing a good job of using my revamped org system. It means I have a monthly meeting with myself where I review my goals for the year. I also look at my month-by-month plan and add relevant things to my to-do list. To reduce stress in my life, I just schedule everything way in advance. Halloween prep in August. Holiday shopping in September. I mean, why not?

Luckily my boys were willing to oblige my early planning this year. The best news is we are getting another year of a family costume! I’m so excited! Henry said he wanted to dress up in a Star Wars theme. Tate easily agreed. Matt and I are always willing to go along for the ride.

The boys want to be storm troopers. So I think we will go with this costume.

I think Matt is going to be an Ewok. I imagine we are going to run out of steam making the boys’ costumes, so this will have to suffice.

I’m going to go with this easy Princess Leia costume. I’ll snag this dress.

Here is a list of family costumes we’ve done (I can’t remember everything):

  • Circus theme: clown, popcorn, weight lifter, elephant
  • Animal theme: lion, tiger, giraffe, can’t remember what Matt was!
  • Picnic theme: picnic, carrot, pineapple, can’t remember what Matt was!
  • Peter Pan: Wendy, Peter Pan, Captain Hook, Tinker Bell
  • Scuba: Two scuba divers, mermaid, shark (Tate changed his mind at the last-minute and pulled out his Captain Hook costume instead)

We’re getting prepped for Halloween over at my house, too! This year we’re doing Mario Brothers as my seven-year-old daughter wants to be Bowser. I am going to be Princess Peach, and my one-year-old son and my husband and going to be Mario and Luigi. We also do homemade costumes, so the prep starts early. Costumes for the grownups tends to depend on time. Last year my daughter was Captain Phasma and my sister made her a helmet using craft foam, silver pipe tape, and an origami technique she found online! Baby was a wee porg, as it was easy to build the details onto a bunting suit.

While I like the themed family costumes I am not sure how feasible it will be for us, given the age difference between my children. We don’t always do a theme. In 2013 I was Rainbow Brite and my daughter was Twink Sprite…and my husband was Jayne Cobb from Firefly.

Kindred spirits, Mary B.! Your costumes sound so cute! Aside from starting prep so early, I have also been Rainbow Brite. Further, the depth of our adult costumes also depends on time. We almost always dress up, but we start buying rather than making stuff by the end. Send a pic when you’re done!
