Happy 10th Birthday, Henry!
Happy 10th Birthday, Dearest Henry!
You launched your 9th year with an awesome slumber party. The next day we flew to Los Angeles for Spring Break. And a couple weeks later, the COVID-19 pandemic hit the United States. Life as we knew it changed pretty dramatically.
We had to cancel our Around-the-World trip. In its place, we headed to Indiana and Michigan for summer vacation. We also traveled to New Braunfels for Fall Break and San Diego and Oceanside for Winter Break. We did road trips for everything and spent as much time as possible outside.
You’ve been happy to spend a lot more time at home than school. But you do like seeing your friends at school. Right now, your best friends are Zoe, Zorian, and James.
We also moved into a new house this year—just two miles away from our old house. We have a TV now and spend a lot of time watching shows like Pawn Stars (your favorite), Magic for Humans, The Toys that Made Us and other shows on the History Channel.
A lot of animals have come into our lives this year. We volunteered to babysit Lizzie the bearded dragon, Brutus the bull dog, Danny the golden retriever, and Barclay the Husky. You continue to be so good with animals.
You have also played a lot of Fortnite, used a soldering iron to make a lot of jewelry, built a lot of forts (either out of boxes, sheets, pillows, or all three), and listened to a lot of audio books. And I love the movies you pick for our Friday Night Movie Nights. And even though you hate going on on Saturday and Sunday adventures, please know I love spending time with you out in nature.
I love snuggling under fuzzy blankets with you, reconnecting with you when you get home from school, watching you make things from scratch, listening to the way you process the world, and hearing your new ideas.
You are one of the most generous people I know. For example, you asked for not one but two hoverboards for your birthday because you wanted to be able to let a friend use one with you. And you offered to let Tate and me try them even before you had a chance.
And here were some of the memorable things you said this year:
- “Mom, you bring out my lightest light and my darkest dark.”
- “I have one more thing to add to my Bucket List: Sleep with all the fuzzy blankets in the house at once.”
- “I’m bringing my crossbow in case there are any turkey vultures. I hear they can be aggressive!”
- “Mom, I’ve got your back.”
- Talking about how you want us to behave when you’re dj-ing: “You know how when you’re dating and not yet married you like to party a lot and you’re not yet mature? Can you act like that?”
- “I’m glad I was born in the Golden Age of Siri directions.”
- “You’re the best mom at snuggling. Except maybe a polar bear mom.”
- “That candy was good for the moment but it’s getting back to me. I hope I make it home alive!”
- “Dad, what do you think my spirit animal is? I think it’s a crab. Aggressive, strong, funny.”
You bring so much light into our lives, Henry!
