A Fun Game to Play with Kids: We Like It!

This weekend, I had to figure out what to do with the boys while Matt went running. Additionally, I wanted to give him a little break. It led to the discovery of a fun game to play with kids.

First, we grabbed breakfast tacos for lunch. I feel so lucky to live in a town where access to breakfast tacos for lunch is a thing. A very common thing.

We took them to one of our favorite parks and ate on a picnic blanket in the shade. Then we played on the swings for a while.

Next, we headed to the Bob Bullock Museum to watch The Star of Destiny film. It’s actually a pretty disturbing piece of state-pride propaganda. However, the boys loved it because the seats shake, water mists the theater, and other out-of-the-ordinary things happen.

Then it was over to Jamba Juice for smoothies. We took them to a local park and brought our plastic bat and whiffle ball with us.

Since it was just the three of us, we made up an easier version of baseball. I set my bag directly across from the area where home plate would normally be (behind the pitcher). One boy was the batter, one was the outfielder, and I was the pitcher. If a boy was able to hit the ball, he would drop the ball, try to run straight out to the bag, circle around the bag, and make it back to touch the bat. Meanwhile, the other boy would either try to catch the ball (automatic out) or grab it and try to touch it to the other boy before he could make it back to the bat. If you made it back to the bat without the other person tagging you with the ball, you got a point.

No, it’s not that different from regular baseball, but there was something about eliminating all the bases that just made it feel so much easier to set up and play.

It made me realize that if we do go on a Family Gap Year, we need to figure an athletic outdoor game to carry with us. I’m thinking Frisbee, maybe?
