Coronavirus Birthday Party Ideas: Whatcha thinking?

Coronavirus Birthday Party Ideas

A colleague of mine is celebrating her birthday really soon. She’s sad that she won’t be able to celebrate properly. It got me thinking about fun coronavirus birthday party ideas during the COVID-19 crisis.

Coronavirus Birthday Party Ideas: #1

OUTSIDE MOVIE NIGHT: Set up a giant screen and projector in a cul-de-sac or large driveway/lawn and have a movie night. Set up rocks to indicate where friends can set up their own chairs very far apart from each other. Watch something fun like Goonies, Sixteen Candles, or Adventures in Babysitting.

Idea: #2

FONDUE DATE NIGHT: If you’d be happy having a more introverted date night, stay home with your partner but do something unusual like make fondue together. You can cook meat fondue in oil with fun dipping sauces. Dip bread in cheese fondue. And then dip fruit, cake, pretzels, etc. in chocolate fondue!

COOKING CLASS: You could find a fun cooking class online and make something you’ve never made before: sushi, homemade pasta, etc.

Idea: #3

MESSAGES FROM FRIENDS: If you’re really in the mood for appreciation and introspection, you can ask your friends and family from all over the country/world to write you a little message. You can find inspiration here.

Idea: #4

TALENT SHOW: If you want to connect with friends and family from all over the world in a fun/silly way, you could ask them to film a talent show act and send it to you. Then you could stitch them all together into a single video that you play for everyone during a Zoom call party.

Idea: #5

DRIVE-BY BIRTHDAY: You could follow this 8 year-old’s lead and do a “drive-by” birthday. Set up a fun picnic for you and your partner/roommate in your front yard and ask friends to “drive-by” during a certain window of time.

Here’s wishing you a little joy and fun during these challenging time!

In our state, we are genuinely being asked to stay home. Our governor made this decision with public health officials. So, for those in a state with a stay-at-home order, both #1 and #5 would be a violation. For a stay-at-home order, social distancing relates to when we MUST be around others for life-sustaining activities (grocery store, etc), not an option for how to hang out despite the order. I think we will all be safer (and especially the most vulnerable will stay alive) if we work hard to create a strong culture of social distancing right now, especially now that eroding the public will for social distancing is a political tactic of the right.

My mom ordered food to be delivered to us from the same restaurant on her birthday (she sent us the menu in advance and we told her what we’d like). Then it was delivered to each of our homes and we had a skype family birthday dinner, instead of the planned in-person restaurant dinner. It was so much fun!
