Skip the Small Talk: Questions to Go Deeper
My Myers-Briggs type means I don’t like small talk. A dear friend of mine who knows this about me recently asked what my go-to-questions are to help me skip the small talk. I thought I would share them here in case anyone else is interested!
My go-to’s are:
- What are you most excited about in your life right now?
- What are you most worried about in your life right now?
Honestly, those two questions are usually enough to get a good conversation going! I recommend starting with the first one. Even that question can startle people because it’s not as surface as things people usually talk about.

Fun Card Game: Golf for 2+ Players
When our friends visited us from Oakland recently, they taught us a new fun card game we had never played: Golf. (As a side note, I can’t remember if I mentioned their visit or not on the blog! Icebreakers: A Fun Get-to-Know-You Game
Once a month at work, we try to do “One Fun Thing.” This month was our Second Annual Popsicle Party. I was reminded of one of my favorite icebreakers. It’s so simple!
Materials
- 1-2 strips of paper per person
- writing utensils
- a bowl or mug
- an object to pass around (I almost used my son’s bunny from the photo above, but it was too smelly!)
- a dice (I think that is plural, but I don’t think it will be clear what I’m talking about it if I actually write it properly!)
