Mightier Self-Regulation Training: Could It Help?
Last week we experienced low lows and high highs as a family. We have a lot going on right now (although I always want to acknowledge that there’s way worse stuff going on for so many other families around the world). Matt and I are both feeling a ton of stress via work. We bring that stress home. It hinders our ability to fill our children’s “buckets.” Then they act out because they need connection. Then their behavior pushes us further away instead of bringing us closer. When I feel particularly low, I grasp for next steps. I finally decided to move forward with Mightier self-regulation training. Have you heard of it?
Mightier uses video games to support children ages 6-14 to build their calming strategies. From what I understand, children strap a heart-monitor onto their wrist or ankle. Next, they start playing a video game on a tablet. As they get more anxious/stressed, the game actually gets harder. Then then have to take breaths and calm themselves down to make the game easier again.
It was developed in a clinical setting in an attempt to meet children where they are. As I know first-hand, it can be challenging to teach children with challenges how to self-regulate through talking. Instead, this approach seeks to teach children in a format that engages them—through video games.
You all know I am a Luddite when it comes to technology with my children. I’ve been trying to keep Henry away from video games because I know they are addictive. On the other hand, I’ve also been trying to lean into who he is and what his hobbies are. Mightier might be a win-win for both of us!
The reviews I’ve read explain that the game actually does help children build muscle memory. They learn to calm themselves with deep breaths when they feel their anxiety rise beyond the video game.
The logic of it makes sense to me. And I think Henry would really like it!
I hesitated so long because there’s an ongoing cost. Beyond the $99 initial investment, it costs $19 per month. I hate adding recurring expenses to our budget! But if Mightier helps build self-regulation, it will be worth it.
I’ll let you know how it goes!
